Bombay HC Questions Mallya's Plea on Fugitive Economic Offender Act
The Bombay High Court is questioning whether it should even hear Vijay Mallya's challenge to a law called the Fugitive Economic Offender (FEO) Act.
Mallya, who is in London, is accused of a big bank fraud in India.
The court wants to know when Mallya will come back to India before it hears his case.
The Enforcement Directorate, which is investigating Mallya, wants the court to dismiss his challenge.
They say Mallya should not be allowed to challenge the law from outside India.
Mallya says his property was wrongly taken, but the ED says the law allows this because of the serious nature of the crime.
The court has postponed the hearing until December 23.
Bombay High Court questioned the validity of Vijay Mallya's plea challenging the Fugitive Economic Offender (FEO) Act, 2018.
The court wants Mallya to confirm when he will return to India before proceeding with the hearing.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) seeks dismissal of Mallya's plea, alleging his involvement in a Rs 6,200 crore bank fraud with an outstanding liability of Rs 15,000 crore.
Mallya claims his right to property was violated due to asset seizure, but the ED argues he had multiple opportunities to appear in court.
The ED asserts that the FEO Act mandates confiscation of properties for offenses over Rs 100 crore, impacting the national economy.
