India Mandates AVAS for EVs to Enhance Road Safety
India is making electric cars and other electric vehicles safer.
They will have a special sound system called AVAS.
This system makes a sound when the vehicle is moving slowly, like in a parking lot, to help people know the car is there.
This is because electric vehicles are very quiet.
The new rule starts in October 2026 for new vehicles and October 2027 for existing ones.
The goal is to prevent accidents, especially at low speeds.
MoRTH proposed AVAS for electric vehicles to alert road users.
AVAS will generate sound at speeds below 20 kmph.
New electric vehicle models must have AVAS starting October 1, 2026.
Existing electric vehicle models must comply by October 1, 2027.
The move aims to address the silent operation of EVs and reduce accidents.
