Maharashtra Scraps Hindi Exam Requirement After Government Review

Maharashtra Scraps Hindi Exam Requirement After Government Review

Maharashtra used to require some government employees to take a Hindi language test.

The test started before the state of Maharashtra was created.

It was first organized by the Maharashtra Rashtrabhasha Sabha Mandal and later by the Directorate of Languages.

The government reviewed whether the test was still useful.

Officials said Marathi is used for government work in Maharashtra.

They said Hindi is not needed equally for government duties today.

English is mainly used for communication with the central government and other states.

The Hindi test will officially end on May 9, 2026.
