Canada Rebukes Trump’s Lake America Order With Giant Sign

Lake Ontario is a large lake shared by Canada and the United States.

President Donald Trump ordered American government agencies to call it Lake America.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford disagreed and put up a very large sign saying Lake Ontario.

The sign was placed near Grimsby, Ontario, and its message was written in English and French.

Canada says the United States can change the name in its own government records but cannot force Canada or other countries to use it.

Other Canadian leaders and New York’s governor also rejected the proposed name.

Indigenous representatives said the lake’s name connects to important history, culture, and identity.

The disagreement happened while the two countries were arguing about tariffs and failed trade talks.
