Prop Traders Retreat as NSE Derivatives Market Faces Tighter Rules

Professional trading firms are doing less business on India’s biggest stock exchange.

In August, they made up 54.7% of trading in futures and options.

That was their smallest share since December 2022.

Their share was about 62% in November 2024.

New trading restrictions and limits on bank funding have made some strategies more expensive.

A new closing auction has also had few participants and caused bigger price movements.

Individual investors now represent a larger share of cash-equity trading.

India’s market regulator is considering changes to the auction system.
