J-K Lawmaker Challenges Bureaucratic Role in Assembly Statehood Debate

Congress MLA Nizamuddin Bhat said government officers were interfering too much with the elected Assembly.

He was discussing letters sent by the chief secretary and law secretary to the Speaker.

The letters advised against a resolution seeking to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

The Assembly adopted that resolution on Monday.

Bhat asked for the law secretary’s letter to be added to the official record.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said this situation could happen because Jammu and Kashmir is a Union Territory.

He also said government work was being delayed, including help for daily wage workers.

Another lawmaker, Nazir Gurezi, said the BJP was harming the House’s dignity.
