Nauru Renames Itself Naoero, Embraces Traditional Identity

Nauru is a tiny island country in the Pacific Ocean.

In 2024, it decided to change its name to Naoero, which is how the people call it in their own language.

The president said this would better honor their culture.

The government got the change approved by lawmakers, so no public vote was needed.

Now the country’s code and the names of its people have changed, and many other countries and the United Nations have started using the new name.
