Farmers Urge Karnataka CM Shivakumar to Begin Bidadi Land Acquisition
Farmers in India asked their state leader to start buying their land so a big new town can be built.
The town, called Bidadi, is planned near the big city of Bengaluru.
Some farmers want to give up their land because their area has a 'Red Zone' label.
Being in the Red Zone has made it hard to sell land or get money from banks for 20 years.
But some other farmers do not want to give up their land because it is good for growing food.
The state leader, D.K. Shivakumar, told farmers they can choose between getting a lot of money or getting part of their land back.
The farmers also asked him to take away the 'Red Zone' label.
The leader promised to talk to his helpers first and said no one will be forced to give up their land.
A farmers' delegation from Byramangala and Kanchugaranahalli urged Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to issue final notification to begin land acquisition for the Bidadi Township project.
Shivakumar had earlier offered Bidadi farmers two options: Rs 3 crore per acre or 50 percent of the area back as developed land.
The farmers asked the Chief Minister to remove the 'Red Zone' tag, which they said has blocked development, land sales, and bank loans for about 20 years.
A section of farmers in the Bidadi vicinity are protesting against the acquisition and asserted they will not part with their fertile farm lands.
Shivakumar assured the farmers he would issue the final notification after consultations with officials, saying there is 'no pressure on farmers to part with their lands.'
