Ukraine Parliament Approves Yevhenii Khmara After Controversial Defence Reshuffle

Ukraine Parliament Approves Yevhenii Khmara After Controversial Defence Reshuffle

Ukraine’s parliament chose Yevhenii Khmara to be the country’s new defence minister.

He replaces Mykhailo Fedorov, who left the job after six months.

Fedorov was removed after a video in which he allegedly supported holding an election that had been postponed because of the war.

His removal caused a public argument between the army and the defence ministry.

Khmara is a major general and previously worked in Ukraine’s Security Service.

He has been involved in fighting Russian forces since 2014, according to his biography.

Khmara promised to help defend Ukraine and reduce Russia’s ability to continue the war.

President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the parliament’s decision.
