SP MP Urges Revision of Food Security Act Criteria
A politician named Javed Ali Khan from the Samajwadi Party spoke in the Indian parliament about a law called the Food Security Act.
This law gives poor people food at a lower price.
Khan said that the rules for who can get this help haven't changed in 13 years, but prices and incomes have gone up.
He thinks the rules should be updated so that more people can still get the help they need.
He said that if the rules aren't changed, about 17 lakh people in Uttar Pradesh might lose their food cards.
He also said that what was considered a poor income in 2013 is not the same as today because of inflation.
SP MP Javed Ali Khan urged the government to revise the income criteria for the Food Security Act.
Around 17 lakh people in Uttar Pradesh risk losing their ration cards due to increased incomes.
The current income limit for beneficiaries is Rs 2 lakh in rural areas and Rs 3 lakh in urban areas.
Khan proposed increasing the income limit to Rs 3.60 lakh in rural areas and Rs 5.40 lakh in urban areas.
The Food Security Act provides subsidized food grains to approximately two-thirds of India's population.
