J&K Assembly Withdraws MLA Pay Bills, Passes Pension Amendment
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly discussed bills that would have raised pay and allowances for some political leaders.
BJP legislators objected to the proposals.
They also referred to the difficulties faced by daily-wage workers.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he had not supported the increases.
He withdrew the bills after saying that one opposing member was enough to stop them.
The Assembly then voted to withdraw the bills.
It also passed another bill about pensions for members of the state legislature.
That bill changes the pension law dating from 1984.
The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly withdrew three Bills proposing higher salaries and allowances for the Chief Minister, Ministers and MLAs.
BJP legislators objected to the proposed increases and referred to problems faced by daily wagers.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the House Committee had recorded no dissenting note and said he was never in favour of the increases.
Abdullah withdrew the Bills, saying they would not pass if even one member opposed them; the Assembly approved the withdrawal by majority vote.
The Assembly separately passed L.A. Bill No. 15 of 2026, amending the Jammu and Kashmir State Legislature Members’ Pension Act, 1984.
