Tinder Romance Derails Spanish NATO Officer’s Career Over Spy Suspicions
A Spanish navy officer working at a NATO headquarters began dating Janina White after meeting her on Tinder.
White was born in Russia and is also a British and Polish citizen.
The officer brought her to a military Christmas party using a visitor pass.
Officials became concerned because he worked near information about Russian ships and submarines.
Spain and NATO opened investigations into the relationship.
Spain suspended his security clearance, and NATO stopped him from entering the Northwood base.
White says she never saw secret information and is not a spy.
She says she was treated unfairly because she was born in Russia.
The officer and White have both described serious personal and professional effects from the investigation.
A senior Spanish naval officer stationed at NATO’s Northwood headquarters began dating Janina White in October 2024.
White, a UK-Polish dual national born in Soviet Russia, attended a Northwood Christmas party with a one-day escorted visitor pass.
Spanish authorities and NATO investigated the relationship, suspended the officer’s clearance, and revoked his Northwood access on June 19, 2025.
Spain ended the officer’s Northwood posting by the end of July 2025; he later returned to Spain and stopped actively working with the navy.
White denies being a Russian spy and is pursuing legal action against the UK Ministry of Defence, alleging discrimination based on her birthplace.
