PAN Card Risks Deactivation by January 1, 2026, if Not Linked to Aadhaar
Imagine your PAN card is like a special ID for your money and taxes in India.
You also have an Aadhaar card, which is another ID.
The government wants everyone to connect these two IDs together by December 31, 2025.
If you don't connect them, your PAN card will stop working on January 1, 2026.
This means you won't be able to file your taxes, get money back from the government, or even get paid your salary properly.
It might also mean you pay more taxes on things you buy.
Some people, like those living far away (NRIs) or very old people, don't need to do this.
But for most people, it's important to connect them so your money matters work smoothly.
You can do this online through the Income Tax website.
The deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar is December 31, 2025.
Failure to link will result in PAN becoming inoperative from January 1, 2026.
An inoperative PAN will prevent ITR filing, refund claims, and may affect salary credits and investments.
Taxpayers can link their PAN and Aadhaar online through the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Exemptions apply to NRIs, individuals aged 80+, and residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and Jammu & Kashmir.
