Tamil Nadu Sets September Deadline for Chennai Monsoon Preparations
Tamil Nadu is getting Chennai and nearby areas ready for the northeast monsoon.
Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar said important preparation work must be finished by the end of September.
Workers are removing mud and silt from thousands of kilometres of stormwater drains.
They are also cleaning silt catch pits, rivers, canals and river mouths so rainwater can flow away.
Pumps will be placed in areas that often become flooded.
Officials must finish missing connections between stormwater drains, including near Chennai Metro Rail works.
Rescue boats, volunteers, relief centres and community kitchens will be prepared for emergencies.
Electricity equipment and underground cables will be made safer to reduce the chance of electrocution.
The preparations are intended to limit disruption from heavy rain and possible El Niño impacts.
Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar ordered officials to complete major monsoon preparedness works by the end of September.
Desilting is underway across 1,671 km of stormwater drains and 1,10,082 silt catch pits within Greater Chennai Corporation limits.
High-capacity pumps will be positioned in flood-prone areas including Velachery, Ambattur SIDCO, Tiruvottiyur and Manali.
Officials were told to complete missing drain links, clear waterways, and prepare boats, volunteers, relief centres and community kitchens.
Electricity and civic agencies were directed to coordinate on drainage, restoration and measures to prevent electrocution during flooding.
