Indian Fertility Bodies Warn Against Routine Use of Non-Invasive Genetic Testing
Indian fertility experts have warned against using a test called niPGT for choosing embryos in IVF treatments.
This test checks embryos for genetic problems without taking any cells from them.
However, the experts found that the test is not accurate enough and can give wrong results about one in five embryos.
This means good embryos might be thrown away, and bad ones might be used, which could lead to miscarriages or babies with genetic disorders.
The experts say the test should not be used for making important decisions about embryos until it is proven to be more reliable.
They also said that the test does not improve the chances of successful pregnancies.
The experts want more research to be done in a controlled way to see if the test can be useful in the future.
Indian fertility bodies advise against routine use of niPGT due to high misdiagnosis rates.
niPGT is less invasive than conventional PGT-A but has lower accuracy (78%).
The test does not improve implantation, pregnancy, or live birth rates.
Experts recommend niPGT should only be used in ethically approved research settings.
Nearly 97% of an independent stakeholder panel endorsed the statement against routine use.
