India, Pakistan Exchange Nuclear Lists Amid Strains
India and Pakistan have a special agreement to keep each other safe.
Every year on January 1st, they share a list of their nuclear power plants and other important atomic places.
This helps them promise not to attack these places.
They have been doing this for over 30 years, and this year was the 35th time they did it.
Even though their relationship is not very good right now, they still followed this agreement.
They sent the lists to each other at the same time in their own countries through their diplomats.
This agreement was made a long time ago, in 1988, and started working in 1991.
Additionally, they also exchanged lists of prisoners, with India asking Pakistan to release and repatriate Indian fishermen and civilian prisoners who have completed their sentences.
India and Pakistan exchanged lists of nuclear installations and facilities on January 1, 2026, as part of a bilateral agreement.
The exchange was conducted simultaneously through diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad.
This was the 35th consecutive annual exchange, with the first one occurring on January 1, 1992.
The agreement, signed on December 31, 1988, and enforced on January 27, 1991, mandates the exchange of such lists annually.
India also exchanged lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen with Pakistan, urging the release and repatriation of Indian prisoners who have completed their sentences.
