US student visa crackdown could cost $3.4 billion, 40,000 jobs

The United States is a country where many students from other countries go to study in colleges and universities.

President Donald Trump's government is making it harder for foreign students to get permission to come.

This is called a student visa crackdown.

Experts from groups like NAFSA counted up the possible damage.

They think the US could lose $3.4 billion in money and about 40,000 jobs because fewer students will come.

A survey says around 111,000 fewer international students will enroll this fall.

The government says it needs tougher checks, like looking at social media, to keep the country safe.

Schools and education leaders say the rules are scaring students away.

They worry the US will lose brilliant students who might invent amazing new things.

New fixed-length visa rules take effect on September 15, 2026.
