SC Orders University to Release Degree Certificate After Delay
A student named Anand had trouble getting his degree because of delays in confirming his caste.
He went to college under a special program for his caste.
The university took a long time to check if he really belonged to that caste.
Even though they eventually said he didn't, he had already finished his classes.
The Supreme Court said the university had to give him his degree anyway.
They agreed the delays weren't his fault and that he shouldn't be punished for them.
However, the court said he would not get any future benefits from being in the special program.
The Supreme Court directed North Maharashtra University to release a degree to a BTech graduate.
The student's caste claim was invalidated years after completing his course due to administrative delays.
He had been admitted under the OBC quota and his caste certificate was sent for verification in 2015.
The High Court had previously criticized the scrutiny committee's 'callous attitude' and imposed costs.
The Supreme Court ruled his completed education should not be jeopardized by delays.
