Ilambazar Woman Treated for Rare Blood Disorder
A 68-year-old woman named Anjana Chattaraj from Ilambazar had a bad accident that broke her leg and wrist.
When doctors at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata were getting ready to fix her leg, they found out she had a very rare and serious blood problem called polycythaemia.
This condition makes her blood too thick, which can cause big problems like strokes or heart attacks.
So, the doctors had to do special treatments to make her blood safer before they could operate.
They did a procedure called phlebotomy, which is like taking out some of her blood, three times over two weeks.
After her blood levels were safe, the doctors successfully fixed her leg.
She is now recovering in the hospital.
A 68-year-old woman, Anjana Chattaraj, from Ilambazar was admitted to SSKM Hospital with a femoral fracture and a wrist injury.
Doctors discovered she had polycythaemia, a rare blood disorder causing high haemoglobin levels and thick blood.
Therapeutic phlebotomy was performed three times to reduce her haemoglobin levels from 22 g/dL to 15 g/dL.
After achieving safe blood levels, the orthopaedic surgery was successfully completed.
The medical team included orthopaedic and anaesthesiology specialists from SSKM Hospital.
