South Korean PM Orders Overhaul After Missing Cases Mishandled

South Korea is investigating police failures in two missing-person cases.

A police officer on Jeju Island closed the cases before checking whether the people were safe.

The body of Jang Mi-ran, who was 37, was found more than three months after her family reported her missing.

Another man’s body was also found after his case was closed early.

Prime Minister Han Seong-sook said officials who acted unfairly or unlawfully would be punished.

She ordered police to review missing-person cases across the country.

She also wants different officials to investigate cases and decide when they can be closed.

President Lee Jae Myung ordered officials to examine the police command system and create reforms.

The National Police Agency is checking whether proper procedures and supervision were followed.
