Supreme Court Extends Manipur Relief Panel
The Supreme Court of India has extended the time for a special committee led by Justice Gita Mittal.
This committee was created to help people affected by violence in the state of Manipur.
The committee, which includes two other retired judges, was supposed to stop working in July 2025, but the court decided to let them continue until July 31, 2026.
The committee has already sent 42 reports to the court about their work.
The court set up this committee after seeing a very upsetting video of women being treated badly during the violence.
The committee's job is to make sure people get the help they need and to check on the progress of investigations into the crimes that happened.
The Supreme Court extended the tenure of the Justice Gita Mittal committee until July 31, 2026.
The committee was originally formed on August 7, 2023, to oversee relief and rehabilitation in Manipur.
The panel has submitted 42 reports to the Supreme Court regarding the rehabilitation efforts.
The committee is authorized to submit its reports directly to the Supreme Court.
The committee was formed in response to the Supreme Court's concern over a disturbing video of women being paraded naked during ethnic violence.
