Bombay High Court Raises Compensation for Bokadvira Landowners

Bombay High Court Raises Compensation for Bokadvira Landowners

Almost 40 years ago, in 1986, the government took land from farmers and villagers in a small place called Bokadvira.

The government wanted the land to build a big, new city called Navi Mumbai.

At first, the landowners were given only about Rs 5 for every square metre — a very small amount.

The villagers were not happy, so they asked the courts for more money.

In 2021, a lower court raised the payment to Rs 1,124 per square metre.

The state government did not agree and asked the Bombay High Court to reduce it.

But the High Court said the land was worth more because it is close to roads, a railway line, factories and a big port.

So it raised the compensation to Rs 1,725 per square metre.

The judge said compensation must be fair and just, not calculated in a rigid way.

Now the exact amount for each landowner will be worked out and checked before the money is finally paid.
