India Proposes Monetization of Transmission Assets for Network Expansion
India wants to sell parts of its power transmission system to private companies.
This will help raise money to build more power lines and towers.
The government needs this to happen because it wants to add more renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, but needs a strong power transmission network to handle them.
This is because these energy sources can be unpredictable.
The CEA has suggested a few ways to do this, and similar things have been done before.
India's transmission network is one of the largest in the world, but it needs to grow faster to meet the country's energy needs.
Central Electricity Authority (CEA) proposed a PPP model for monetizing intra-state transmission assets
Three options for hiving off assets: slump sale, demerger, direct asset transfer
Estimated investment of ₹9.16 trillion needed for transmission network expansion by 2032
Transmission assets seen as low-risk, attractive to global and domestic investors
Similar monetization efforts ongoing for the Centre's network and Power Grid Corporation
