Fake death claim for Sam Altman briefly appears on Google
Someone secretly changed a Wikipedia page to say that a famous technology leader named Sam Altman had died.
Sam Altman is the boss of OpenAI, a company that builds very smart computer programs.
But the news was not true, and no real news organization reported it.
Wikipedia is a website where many people can edit pages, and sometimes people make fake changes for fun or to cause trouble.
Google's computer systems look at Wikipedia to show quick facts when people search online.
Those computer systems saw the fake change and showed it as if it were a real fact for a little while.
People on a social media site called X noticed it and told everyone it was fake.
Google soon fixed the mistake, and Google said the change was not made by Google.
The mix-up made people talk again about the 'Dead Internet Theory,' the idea that much of the internet is run by machines.
Sam Altman even joked about the theory, saying it seems like there are many computer-run accounts on Twitter now.
A vandalized Wikipedia edit on August 12, 2026 falsely declared OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dead at age 41.
No major news outlet reported the supposed death, and users on X began flagging the edit.
Google's automated systems briefly ingested the fake edit and showed a 'date of death' next to Altman's name in Search.
Google removed the false information and blocked the page, saying the change was not made by Google.
The incident revived the Dead Internet Theory, with Altman noting many LLM-run Twitter accounts now exist.
