US Sanctions China, Hong Kong Firms in Fresh Iran Crackdown

US Sanctions China, Hong Kong Firms in Fresh Iran Crackdown

The United States added sanctions against several companies and people in China and Hong Kong.

Sanctions are penalties meant to make it harder for someone to do business internationally.

U.S. officials say the targeted network helped Iran obtain restricted equipment and move money.

One company was accused of helping buy laser-optics equipment for an Iranian defense-linked university.

Other companies were accused of financing purchases or helping with logistics.

The effort is called Operation Economic Outcast.

The United States did not punish major Chinese banks.

Experts say smaller companies may be replaced easily, so the sanctions might not greatly disrupt Iran’s networks.
