Director Mary Mazzio Brings Mighty Mary’s Women’s Sailing Story

Mighty Mary is a documentary about a boat crew made up almost entirely of women.

The crew competed in a major sailing campaign connected to the 1995 America’s Cup.

Many of the women were new to top-level sailing, but they trained hard and faced some of the world’s best sailors.

Director Mary Mazzio learned about the crew years ago because she was also an Olympic athlete.

She says the project showed how women were treated differently in sports and workplaces during the 1990s.

Some men involved in the project now acknowledge that the team’s management made mistakes.

The movie will open in theaters in 15 U.S. markets on Friday.

Mazzio wants the film to inspire girls to try difficult things even when they are afraid.

She also says failure can help people grow.
