OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Urges US to Expand Tax Credits for AI Growth
Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI (the company that made ChatGPT), thinks the U.S. should help companies that build big computer systems for artificial intelligence.
He wants the government to give tax breaks, like a discount on taxes, to companies that make AI computer parts and buildings to store them.
This is because lots of people want to use AI, and it needs lots of powerful computers.
Altman says this will help America be the best at AI.
He also said this is different from asking for loans to build computer chip factories, which he has also talked about with the government.
He plans to spend a lot of money on these computers himself.
Another government person said there won't be any free money for AI companies from the government.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is advocating for the U.S. to expand the Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credit (AMIC) to cover AI server production, data centers, and grid components.
Altman stated that this expansion would support U.S. re-industrialization across the entire tech stack, benefiting various industries.
OpenAI has committed to spending $1.4 trillion on computational resources over the next eight years.
The request comes amid booming demand for AI products like ChatGPT, leading tech companies to plan more data centers and advanced chips.
A White House official, David Sacks, has indicated that there would be no federal bailout for AI companies.
