US expands prosecution of Haiti president assassination with 30 indictments

The United States has brought new charges against 30 people connected to the killing of Haiti’s president, Jovenel Moise.

The president was assassinated in 2021.

US prosecutors say the group planned to kidnap and kill him and replace him with another leader.

They say Colombian fighters pretended to be American drug agents.

Prosecutors also say the group used companies and pandemic loans to pay for the plan.

One accused organizer is Joseph Felix Badio.

Gang leader Vitel’homme Innocent was also charged, but he remains free in Haiti.

Some experts hope the US case will finally bring answers, while others doubt it will change the situation in Haiti.
