Canada Suspends U.S. Trade Talks, Vows Dollar-for-Dollar Tariffs

Canada and the United States were discussing a trade agreement.

Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney, said the talks had made some progress.

However, he said the progress was not enough for Canadians.

He also said the United States changed its proposed terms at the last minute.

Canada viewed those changes as unfair and not economically workable.

Because of this, Canada stopped the negotiations for now.

Canada’s negotiators were told to return to Ottawa.

Carney said Canada would respond to U.S. tariffs with tariffs of its own, dollar for dollar.
