Teacher Treks 5 Kilometres Daily to Teach One Student
Jivan Mithari is a 55-year-old teacher in Maharashtra.
Every school day, he walks 2.5 kilometres through a forest to reach his school and 2.5 kilometres back.
He has made this journey for 13 years.
The school currently has only one officially enrolled student, Swara Bodake.
Swara’s younger sister also attends because the hamlet has no anganwadi centre.
The path can be dangerous because of rain, gaurs and leopards.
Another school is much farther away for the children.
Mithari says he will continue teaching because even one child deserves an education.
He is due to retire in May 2029.
Jivan Mithari, 55, has walked 2.5 kilometres each way through forest to reach his school for 13 years.
The Zilla Parishad school at Kawaltek Dhangarwada has no electricity, and vehicles cannot reach it.
Only Class 3 student Swara Bodake is officially enrolled, while her younger sister also attends informally.
Mithari’s route includes risks from heavy rain, gaurs, leopards and other wildlife.
The nearest alternative school is about 5.5 kilometres away each way, making an 11-kilometre daily journey difficult for young children.
