Ganga Erosion Damages Embankment, Destroys Houses in Bihar
Part of the bank of the Ganga River began collapsing in Bhagalpur, Bihar.
It happened near Mahadevpur Ghat on Friday evening.
The erosion damaged a 50-metre embankment and affected about 40 to 50 homes.
Five homes and a temple were reported destroyed.
Some other houses developed cracks, so people began leaving the area for safety.
Teams of engineers and local officials are working to protect the riverbank.
They have brought bags, boats, vehicles and other supplies.
Although the river level had gone down, its strong current could still cause more land to collapse.
Erosion began around 6 pm Friday near Mahadevpur Ghat in Raghopur village, Bhagalpur district.
About 40–50 houses were affected, and five were destroyed; a temple was also swallowed by the erosion.
The erosion damaged a 50-metre embankment, while around 10 permanent houses developed cracks.
Authorities urged residents to evacuate and deployed 15 engineering teams to reinforce vulnerable areas.
The river level was below the warning mark and had fallen about 12 cm in 12 hours, but its strong current remained a risk.
