Dhruv Rathee Detained Ahead of CJP Protest in Delhi
Dhruv Rathee, a YouTuber, was detained at his home in Gurugram before a planned protest in Delhi.
The Cockroach Janta Party and student groups wanted to protest at Jantar Mantar.
They raised concerns about changes to voter lists and called for election chief Gyanesh Kumar to resign.
Police had not given permission for the gathering, saying there were safety and procedural concerns.
Police increased security and detained people they said might be heading to the protest.
News reports gave different numbers for how many people were detained.
The CJP called for Rathee and other detained people to be released and asked protesters to remain peaceful.
Police said their preparations were intended to prevent trouble, while CJP leaders described them as an attempt to discourage dissent.
Delhi Police detained YouTuber Dhruv Rathee at his Gurugram Sector 56 residence on Saturday, October 10, ahead of a planned CJP protest at Jantar Mantar.
The demonstration was called over allegations of voter-list manipulation during electoral-roll revisions and changes to Form 6, with protesters demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
Delhi Police denied permission for the gathering, citing security, procedural and public-order concerns, and deployed personnel, barricades and surveillance across the capital.
Reports gave differing detention figures, including about 150 protesters in New Delhi, more than 400 detained overnight and over 600 preventive detentions across Delhi’s districts.
CJP demanded Rathee’s release and urged peaceful conduct; its founder Abhijeet Dipke accused authorities of intimidating protesters, while police said their measures aimed to maintain law and order.
