CAG Report Reveals Corruption in 2017 Malda Floods Relief
The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) found that a lot of money meant to help people after the 2017 Malda floods in West Bengal was stolen.
The government said they needed ₹100 crores to help people whose houses were damaged, but the CAG found that the money was not given to the right people.
Some people got money many times for the same damage, and some got money even though their houses were not damaged.
The CAG also found that some government workers took money by pretending to be victims.
No one has been punished for this yet.
The BJP alleges that TMC officials misappropriated the funds, while the TMC has not yet responded to these allegations.
The CAG report revealed that ₹100 crores of flood relief funds were embezzled by the TMC government in West Bengal.
Funds were disbursed to only 6,965 selected people, with some receiving multiple payments for the same damage.
An additional ₹7.5 crores were embezzled by claiming damage to houses that were unaffected during the floods.
Procedural lapses and lack of verification allowed for the misappropriation of funds.
No police complaints were filed despite the evidence of corruption in the distribution of relief funds.
