PFRDA Strengthens NPS Safeguards with New Rules
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has made new rules to protect people who have National Pension System (NPS) accounts.
Now, pension funds must take responsibility if any third-party companies they work with make mistakes.
This change was announced on 13 July 2026.
The rules say that even if a pension fund outsources some work, it still has to answer to the subscribers.
The third-party companies must also follow PFRDA's rules and can be supervised by them.
This is to make sure that NPS subscribers are protected and that the pension funds are accountable.
PFRDA also introduced a new framework called the Regulatory Sandbox to encourage innovation in the pension sector while keeping subscribers safe.
PFRDA has made pension funds responsible for any lapses by third-party entities they engage.
The change was notified through the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (Exits and Withdrawals under the National Pension System) (Amendment) Regulations, 2026.
The new Regulation 4A allows pension funds to engage third-party entities but holds them accountable for any service lapses.
Third-party entities must have the technological capability to integrate with pension funds and PFRDA-registered intermediaries.
PFRDA also introduced a Regulatory Sandbox framework to encourage innovation in the pension sector.
