Why India Has More Banknotes Circulating Than the US

India uses a very large number of physical banknotes.

The Reserve Bank of India says 176 billion notes are currently circulating.

India makes about 28 to 30 billion notes each year.

It removes or disposes of about 21 billion notes annually.

The United States has about 56 billion dollar bills.

The euro area has about 30 billion banknotes.

India’s notes are more heavily weighted toward lower values.

That means people need more individual notes to complete transactions worth the same amount of money.
