Indian Railways Launches Online Luggage Booking July 31
Indian Railways is letting people book space for their bags online if they have a confirmed train ticket.
The bags must stay inside the train’s reserved compartments.
The rules for how much you can bring stay the same as before.
If you want to bring more than the free allowance, you can pay a little extra.
A new online system is being built by CRIS to make this easy for everyone.
Indian Railways will allow passengers with confirmed tickets to book personal luggage online from July 31, 2026.
The service applies only to luggage carried inside reserved compartments and follows existing weight limits.
Free luggage allowances remain unchanged: 70 kg in First AC, 50 kg in First Class/Second AC, 40 kg in Third AC, AC Chair Car and Sleeper, 35 kg in Second Class.
Passengers may book excess luggage up to the maximum permissible weight, paying 1.5× the standard rate.
The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) is developing and testing the online booking application.
