China's Iron Ore Trader Expands Role Selling Vale Cargoes
Imagine China has a big company, CMRG, that buys and sells iron ore, which is used to make steel.
This company is now helping a Brazilian company called Vale sell its iron ore in China.
Previously, Vale preferred to sell directly to Chinese steelmakers through long-term contracts.
However, with the market well-supplied, Vale is now using CMRG.
This helps Vale manage its large iron ore production.
For China, this strengthens its control over iron ore prices and supply in a market traditionally controlled by big global mining companies.
CMRG is seen as a fair supplier, which benefits the steel mills.
China Mineral Resources Group Co. (CMRG) is selling iron ore for Brazilian miner Vale SA.
CMRG has been selling Vale's product since at least mid-August.
This marks the first time CMRG has sold Vale's cargoes.
Vale previously focused on long-term contracts with Chinese steelmakers.
The move aims to manage high output and reshape market dynamics.
