Gujarat floods: insurers anticipate Rs 5,000 crore in property claims
Heavy rain caused very bad flooding in Gujarat, a state in India.
Water flooded many homes, roads and public places in several districts.
The places that were hit hardest were Surat, Navsari and Valsad.
Many families had to leave their homes, and more than 40,000 people were moved to safety.
The Army and rescue teams came to help people who were stuck.
Insurance companies pay money to people when their homes or property get damaged.
These companies believe they will get about Rs 5,000 crore worth of requests for money due to the floods.
Most of these requests will be for damaged property like homes and buildings.
Even though this is a lot of money, the companies say prices for property insurance will not go up.
That is because they share the risk with other big insurance companies and there is a lot of competition.
They also expect car damage claims to come in slowly later on.
Insurers expect nearly Rs 5,000 crore in claims from the Gujarat floods, mainly for property damage.
Property insurance premiums are not expected to rise despite the claims, citing heavy reinsurance and intense market competition.
Surat, Navsari and Valsad were among the worst-affected districts, with submerged roads disrupting transport and public services.
Authorities evacuated more than 40,000 residents, while the Army and disaster response forces were deployed to assist stranded people.
Motor insurance claims are expected to emerge gradually, and 2024 Gujarat flood claims stood at Rs 1,500-2,000 crore.
