Uganda Opposition Candidate Claims Beating by Security Forces
Bobi Wine, a famous singer who became a politician, says he and his friends were hit by police and soldiers while they were campaigning in Uganda.
He says they were beaten with sticks and stones, and some of his friends had to go to the hospital.
Bobi Wine is running against the current president, Yoweri Museveni, in the upcoming election.
The government says Bobi Wine and his supporters broke the rules by having a big group and campaigning too late.
The United Nations says many of Bobi Wine's supporters have been arrested this year.
Bobi Wine claims he and his supporters were beaten by security forces during a campaign event in Gulu, Uganda.
He alleges that the attack was due to President Museveni's fear of losing support to him.
A video posted by Wine shows military and police personnel beating people with sticks.
Military spokesperson Chris Magezi accused Wine and his supporters of forming an illegal procession and campaigning beyond the prescribed time.
The U.N. Human Rights Chief reported an intensifying crackdown on the opposition, with at least 550 supporters of Wine's party detained this year.
