Zero FIR Filed Against Protester Over Modi Remarks
A woman named Ruchika Singh was accused of saying mean words about India's Prime Minister during a protest at a big open space in Delhi called Jantar Mantar.
A man from Ghaziabad named Smriti Singh told the police that Ruchika used bad language, so the police wrote a special report called a Zero FIR.
This report can be started at any police station and will be sent to the main station in Delhi.
Some people, like Saurav Das from the protest group, think using the criminal system for this is too harsh and that the person should instead use civil court.
The police officer, Manisha Singh, said the Zero FIR helps record complaints quickly.
The protest was about worries that exam papers were leaked, and it ended after the government agreed to some changes, including the education minister stepping down.
The incident shows how protests and legal actions can clash over what is considered free speech and what is punishable.
A Zero FIR was filed in Noida against Ruchika Singh for allegedly using abusive language about Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a Jantar Mantar protest on July 23, 2026.
The complaint was lodged by Smriti Singh, a Ghaziabad resident, at the Expressway police station and cites Sections 352, 353(1), and 356(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das criticized the use of criminal law against protesters, arguing that civil defamation proceedings should be pursued instead.
Noida police officer Manisha Singh confirmed the FIR and explained that a Zero FIR can be registered at any station and will be transferred to New Delhi for investigation.
The protest, part of the Cockroach Janta Party’s campaign over alleged NEET paper leaks, ended on July 25, 2026, after the government conceded to key demands, including the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
