Emirates NBD Gets RBI Approval for Subsidiary in India
Emirates NBD, a big bank from Dubai, got permission from India's RBI to change how it operates in India.
They want to turn their current branches into a special type of company called a WOS.
This is like setting up their own local Indian company.
This change will allow the bank to be more flexible and make sure it follows all the rules set by the RBI.
To do this, they need to have a lot of money and follow strict rules.
It's a big step to show they're committed to staying in India for the long term, similar to what DBS Bank of Singapore and SBM Bank of Mauritius have done.
RBI granted Emirates NBD in-principle approval to convert Indian branches into a wholly owned subsidiary (WOS).
The move is in line with RBI guidelines encouraging foreign banks to localize operations.
Emirates NBD aims to increase operational flexibility through this change.
The bank must comply with specific regulatory requirements including Basel III norms.
Only DBS Bank of Singapore and SBM Bank of Mauritius currently operate as WOSs in India.
