India's Exam Crisis Is Also a Jobs Crisis

India's Exam Crisis Is Also a Jobs Crisis

Many young people in India compete for a small number of government jobs.

These jobs are popular because they are usually more secure and predictable than many other available jobs.

In 2024, about 30 lakh people competed for around 17,700 government positions.

This makes exams extremely important to candidates and their families.

If a paper is leaked or an exam is cancelled, many people can lose years of preparation and money.

Weak security, corruption and poor administration cause malpractice, while the shortage of good jobs makes its effects worse.

The government needs to make exams fair, secure and predictable.

India also needs more good jobs outside government so one exam does not decide a young person’s future.
