Telangana Speaker Dismisses MLA Disqualification Petitions
The Speaker of the Telangana Legislative Assembly, Gaddam Prasad Kumar, made a big decision today.
He said that five MLAs who were accused of switching parties should not be disqualified.
These MLAs are Arikepudi Gandhi, Tellam Venkata Rao, Bandla Krishna Mohan Reddy, Prakash Goud, and Gudem Mahipal Reddy.
The BRS party, which filed the complaint, said the MLAs won their seats as BRS members but later joined the Congress party.
The Speaker said there wasn't enough proof to show they had really switched parties.
The BRS leaders are unhappy and plan to challenge this decision in court.
The Supreme Court had earlier told the Speaker to make a decision by December 18.
Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar dismissed disqualification petitions against five MLAs accused of defecting to the Congress party.
The Speaker found insufficient evidence to prove the MLAs had defected, despite allegations by the BRS.
The BRS, which filed the petitions, plans to challenge the Speaker's decision in court, calling it a 'cruel joke in democracy.'
The Supreme Court had directed the Speaker to decide on the petitions by December 18, after issuing a contempt notice for delay.
Eight of the ten MLAs involved submitted replies to the notices, while two sought more time.
