Assam to present case for Haloi Keots' Scheduled Caste status
The Assam government is looking at whether the Haloi Keot community should be added to the list of people who get special benefits (Scheduled Caste).
The Keot community has asked the government to do this.
The government will send its findings to the central government, which decides who gets these benefits.
Currently, about 70,000-80,000 Haloi Keots in Assam are not on the list.
The government is also dealing with other communities asking for similar benefits.
The central government will then make a decision on the matter.
Assam government will submit a report to the Centre regarding Haloi Keots' demand for Scheduled Caste (SC) status.
Law and Justice Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass stated the government is reviewing the Keot community's application for SC recognition.
Approximately 70,000-80,000 Haloi Keots in Assam are outside the SC category.
The central government will decide on the SC status for Haloi Keots.
The Keot community's demand coincides with six tribal communities seeking Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
