Bhopal Dowry Cases Show Few Convictions, Frequent Compromises

A court in Bhopal handled thousands of cases involving alleged dowry-related cruelty.

These cases were filed under a law known as Section 498A.

From 2021 to June 2026, 3,187 cases were tried.

Only 14 ended with the accused being convicted.

More than half ended when the couples reached an agreement.

The report says some agreements involved money or returning belongings.

A counsellor said many cases began with ordinary disagreements between husbands and wives.

However, the cases also involved women who alleged dowry harassment or domestic violence.
