Chlorine Leak at Nagpur Water Plant Hospitalizes Over 40

Chlorine gas escaped from a large cylinder at a water plant in Nagpur.

The leak started at about 1 a.m.

on Monday.

The gas moved into nearby neighborhoods and made people cough or have trouble breathing.

More than 40 people were reported sick or hospitalized, although one police account said about 40 were receiving treatment.

Police moved nearby residents to safer places and blocked off the area.

Firefighters, police, water-utility workers, and a rescue team came to help.

Rescue workers wore protective equipment while dealing with the cylinder.

They put it into water mixed with caustic soda, which helped make the remaining gas safer.
