Twin Pandas Return to China Amid Diplomatic Tensions
Two panda siblings, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei, are going back to China from Japan.
They were born in Japan but belong to China.
They are leaving because China and Japan are not getting along well.
The pandas have been very popular in Japan, and their departure marks the first time in about 50 years that Japan won't have any pandas.
China has used pandas as a way to make friends with other countries, but now it's not clear if Japan will get new pandas anytime soon.
The pandas' parents are still in Japan, but the cubs have to go back to China.
People in Japan are sad to see them go, and many wanted to see them one last time before they leave.
Twin pandas Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei will return to China from Japan on January 27, 2024.
Their departure is due to diplomatic tensions between China and Japan over remarks on Taiwan by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
This marks the first time in about 50 years that Japan will be without any pandas.
The pandas were born in Japan but belong to China under a lease agreement that requires offspring to be returned.
China has used pandas as a tool of diplomatic outreach, and it's uncertain if Japan will receive new pandas in the future.
