Kerala High Court: Distilleries Liable for Excise Officer Pay
The Kerala High Court has made a decision about who pays excise officers who watch over liquor manufacturing.
The court said that private distilleries, or the companies that make liquor, have to pay the full salary and extra benefits to the government for these officers.
Previously, a lower court had said the distilleries only needed to pay extra allowances.
The State government appealed the lower court's decision.
The High Court agreed with the State government, pointing out that distilleries have to pay these costs as part of their license conditions under the Abkari Act and other rules.
Basically, the distilleries are responsible for covering the full cost of having these officers on site to oversee the production of alcohol.
The Kerala High Court ruled in favor of the State government.
Private distilleries must pay full pay and allowances for excise officers.
The ruling overturns a previous single judge's verdict.
The case involved appeals regarding officer payment responsibilities.
The court cited the Abkari Act and related rules in its decision.
