Supreme Court Criticizes States on Stray Dog Management
The Supreme Court of India scolded many states and union territories for not having good plans or enough facilities to control the number of stray dogs.
The court said that most states did not have enough data, workers, or clear plans to handle the problem.
They also said that some states were giving false information about how many dogs they had sterilized.
The court was especially worried about the many people, especially children and poor workers, who get bitten by dogs.
Some states admitted they had problems and asked for more time to fix them.
The court warned that they would not accept vague promises anymore and would punish states that did not provide real data.
The next hearing is on 29th January.
Animal rights groups have objected to some of the court's orders, such as the ban on releasing dogs back into the same areas.
Supreme Court criticized states and UTs for lacking infrastructure to control stray dog population.
Court noted that states provided vague claims without reliable data or clear action plans.
Amicus Curiae Gaurav Agarwal highlighted gaps in ABC centres, dog shelters, and manpower across states.
Court questioned inflated sterilization figures, calling some data 'absolutely fudged up'.
States admitted gaps in shelters and catching mechanisms, seeking more time to improve systems.
