SC Directs HEIs on Student Safety and Equity
The government and the Supreme Court have made new rules for colleges and universities.
These rules say that every school must have a special team to help students who are treated unfairly.
This team will have people from different backgrounds, like those from lower castes, people with disabilities, and women.
They will listen to complaints and try to make the school a fairer place.
If a college is too small to have its own team, the university it belongs to will help.
The team will also work with local groups and legal services to support students.
The Supreme Court also said that schools must report any student suicide or unnatural death to the police right away.
Schools must also have doctors nearby to help students in emergencies.
They need to fill empty teacher jobs quickly, especially for teachers from marginalized communities.
Schools must also make sure that scholarships are given on time so that students do not face problems because of delays.
Government mandates equity committees in higher education institutions to address discrimination and promote equity.
Committees must include members from OBCs, SCs, STs, PwDs, and women, with terms of 2 years for members and 1 year for special invitees.
Supreme Court directs HEIs to report any suicide or unnatural death of a student to the police immediately and ensure access to medical help within a 1-km radius.
HEIs must fill vacant faculty positions within 4 months, prioritizing posts reserved for marginalized and underrepresented communities.
Backlog of pending scholarship disbursements must be cleared within 4 months, with future disbursements to have clear timelines and no delay policies.
